Doctor Pim Van Lommel, a dutch cardiologist, researcher and author stated:

“The reported memory of all impressions during a special state of consciousness, like: out of body experience, veridical perception, seeing a tunnel, a light or light being, seeing deceased relatives, having a life review and a conscious return to the body. Mostly occurring during a critical medical situation like cardiac arrest, in other life-threatening situations (including: childbirth, shock from loss of blood, coma from traumatic brain injury, near drowning, and also in other serious disorders not immediately life threatening) or without an obvious reason (depression, isolation or meditation).” 

He goes on to note: 

“This transformation always causes enhanced intuitive sensitivity, profound and permanent change of personality, increased life insight (the conviction of continuity of consciousness—a non-dual realization wherein the NDE person sees that they have left their body and are still alive, thus they lose the fear of death.”

After Dr. Raymond Moody’s book “Life After Death, came out in 1977, many people began to ask themselves: 

‘Is there “life after death?’.

 Books and articles written by educated doctors, especially cardiologists, began to come out. IANDS, a newly formed group committed to further study of NDE’s was started. 

In a 1992 poll it was estimated that over 13 million Americans have had such experiences (with an estimate of well over 20 million today).  

The stories of NDEs are, of course anecdotal, there is no written record of their actualities. (How could there be?)  It is their sheer numbers which give them their credibility. There are many common elements in the NDE, such as: feeling of overwhelming love, mental telepathy (veridical perception), life review, meetings with a divine being, ecstasy, unlimited knowledge, shown the future, tunnel of light, shown levels of the afterlife and told they are not yet ready to end their current form existence. 

 Some researchers consider the study of NDE’s to be possibly the only empirical approach to evaluate theories about consciousness. 

One of the most profound evidence that consciousness survives bodily death resides in what is known as veridical perception in near death experience.

A veridical perception is when an ND experiencer reports hearing or seeing people or events while physiologically dead on the table and later they are able to give details that should be impossible to perceive but are later verified as accurate.

Saints, Sages and realized Spiritual Masters often manifest great insight much like a veridical perception. This is perceived as a miracle by many but the Master claims no credit and does not look at the ability as anything unusual. It is a simple and natural occurrence. The spiritually illumined are attuned to the vastness of Consciousness when most humans are identified with their body form (ego) and mind (thoughts).  

 Here is an example of veridical perception documented by Dr. Raymond Moody:

 “An elderly woman had been blind since childhood. But, during her NDE, the woman had regained her sight and she was able to accurately describe the instruments and techniques used during the resuscitation of her body. After the woman was revived, she reported the details to her doctor. She was able to tell her doctor who came in and out, what they said, what they wore, what they did, all of which was true.”

 Many such cases are fully documented and in the last few decades myriad books have even been written about phenomena in great detail. 

Most of those who’ve had a NDE lose their fear of death. They have seen the light and looked beyond the veil of conditioned thought states. They understand that this life is way more than what the mind could ever understand.
